We’ve taken risks and broken rules

I promised you on day one that this wouldn’t be a typical campaign.

We weren’t going to follow the DC playbook that has failed us too many times. Doing something as historic as winning Texas requires taking risks and breaking “rules.”

One of the biggest decisions for every campaign is how you spend your time. It’s the most limited resource a campaign has.

Most politicians get convinced by DC consultants to spend hours on end locked in windowless rooms doing “call time” — dialing up billionaire mega-donors to beg for money. It’s soul-sucking.

I made the bet that, if we ran a true people-powered campaign that rejected corporate PAC money and wasn’t beholden to billionaires, people like you would come through for us.

More than 1.5 million people have proven us right, and it’s why we’re in a strong position heading into the final week of this race.

So how do I spend my time instead? Doing what we’ve done since day one of this campaign, when 1,800 people showed up in my hometown of Round Rock with less than 12 hours’ notice:

Meeting people in every corner of our state:

Talking about how we take back our state and change our politics forever:

And after every one of these events, I’ve stayed around to take a photo and have a conversation with every single person who wants one.

It’s often the longest part of the program, but it’s important to me and to our movement. It’s a chance to have a real conversation with Texans and hear about what’s important to them. And I stay until I meet every single person who lines up.

I think this approach — which some people in DC might call radical — is what people want to see from their leaders. Texans can see the contrast for themselves. When Republicans held their Billionaire Ball (the midterm convention) in Dallas, they toasted to their corruption behind closed doors at fundraisers where they charged as much as $80,000 for a photo with the president.

One-on-one time with a candidate shouldn’t go to the highest bidders. If I’m asking for your vote, I believe you deserve the chance to have a conversation with me directly (and a photo will always be free)!

I believe in raising the bar on what you can expect from your leaders.

None of this would’ve been possible without your support, and when we win next Tuesday, it will be because you believed in an underdog campaign that decided to take risks and try things that DC told us were radical.

But we’re not done yet. We still need significant resources to make sure we come out on top on Election Day.

So if you agree with our approach and want to flip this seat, I am sincerely asking you to make a contribution to our campaign today. Taking back Texas and changing our politics requires all of us to play a role in the fight.
