You deserve an explanation

I know I have asked a lot of folks during this campaign. I would love it if I never had to ask for another dollar, but that would mean forfeiting at the 5-yard line.

But before I ask for another dollar from anyone, you deserve an explanation. So let me pull back the curtain here on how our strategy and budget work.

If you look at our budget right now, you’ll see a spreadsheet with a bunch of red. My campaign manager has formatted it to remind me just how many budget holes we still have to fill.

All that red represents the expenses that we want to authorize — the things our strategy says we need to execute to win but don’t have the cash on hand to pay for yet.

As of now, every dollar we have raised has been spent or allocated to a program (advertising, field organizing, event costs, etc.) already. That’s great. It’s why we have the momentum and are in a strong position right now.

But that means every dollar we don’t raise is money we have to pull out of budgets. That means cutting a program or expense that is necessary for us to win, and the truth is the overwhelming majority of what we raise to fund our people-powered movement comes in response to messages like this one. So I have to ask:

We’re feeling really good on the ground. Turnout is surging everywhere in ways most experts didn’t predict, and it means there are opportunities for us to expand our reach and bring more Texans into our movement.

There are investments we can make that will pay massive dividends in the precincts and counties where we need to increase our vote margin to ensure we win.

In a race as close as this — where a handful of votes could make the difference — everything is going to matter. If each of us steps up and plays a role, I have no doubt our movement can overcome the hundreds of millions of dollars being thrown at us.

But if we sit back and take it for granted, it’ll mean budget cuts and a risk that we come up short on Tuesday night.

So we need a HUGE number of donations — especially before our October fundraising deadline — if we’re going to take back Texas.
